Hail All my Readers!
Welcome to my weblog.
The site's purpose is manifold. As a traditionalist, I will write about Tradition in general, and more specifically Teutonic paganism (or heathenry). I will deal with religion, art, politics, philosophy, and life from a traditionalist perspective. A large part of my blog will also be devoted to the problems encountered by a traditionalist heathen trying to live in a world of rampant materialism and disenchantment.
It will seem strange to many that a traditionalist should use the internet, of all things, to expound upon the troubles of the modern condition. This is just a misunderstanding of what we mean by "modernity."
To put it simply:
MODERNITY DOES NOT EQUAL TECHNOLOGY.
TECHNOLOGY DOES NOT EQUAL MODERNITY.
This distinction is rarely made, since the profound technological advancements of the past few centuries historically coincide with the advent of modernity.
Modernity is above all a state of being. There are certain philosophical assumptions underlying it which are so widespread that they are taken for granted. Among them are the idea of continual progress, not only of science but of mankind, of species, of art and philosophy. Another is the idea of individualism, i.e., that an individual has meaning and significance within himself, without reference to a larger metaphysical context. This leads to democracy, which we in the West take for granted as being the best way to conduct our political affairs.
Materialism is one of the most deleterious aspects of modernity. Far from being the sole province of atheists, it has crept into the worldview of many people who consider themselves religious.
It is not only pervasive but absolutely corrosive.
None of these philosophical stances are necessary to technological progress; nor do science and technology logically lead to them. Technology is increasingly pressed into service to further the cause of modernity, but so are poetry, music, and the visual arts. No-one objects to traditionalists using those things!
An Asian proverb says that rather than stand and fight a tiger, which would be folly, you should ride upon its back where it cannot reach you, until it is too exhausted to fight. This blog is an attempt to ride the tiger of technology in order to advance the cause of heathenry, tradition, and ultimately the cause of mankind itself.
